Why Me?

I visited an exhibition at a small gallery long ago. I’ve forgotten the artist’s name and I remember only one painting—that of a bespectacled man with his head slumped on one hand behind a desk piled with bills. He looked very crestfallen despite the painting’s colourfulness. It was the only painting with “SOLD” affixed on it and I smiled when I read its title: “Why Me?” Someone must have found resonance in it and unsurprisingly: haven’t we all asked that question before?
